Prerequisite - Introduction to Precision Machining.
The fundamentals for manual machine tool practices for the lathe, mill, and drill press will be explained and demonstrated during this class. Topics include: machine tool safety, proper drilling speeds, and different types of drill bits and their coatings related to drill press operations. You will work side-by-side with your instructor to complete NIMS machining projects on new ProtoTrak machines. Students will complete a NIMS Machine Tool project and take a NIMS online quiz (Job Planning, Benchwork, and Layout) to earn a NIMS credential.
Clear safety glasses are required. Enrolled students are required to have internet access and a working email address to complete online homework assignments.
BRCC currently has scholarship funding to defray the cost of many workforce courses - such as Machine Tool I. Most Virginia residents receive a 2/3 discount on tuition and, for many unemployed individuals or individuals in low paying jobs, courses are free or nearly free. Email (
