« back to classes page
Prerequisite - Introduction to Precision Machining (formerly Fundamentals of Fabrication), Machine Tool I & II, Machine Tool III: Milling, and Turning Operations I: Turning Between Centers.

This advanced level machining course explains the operation of the manual lathe in regards to inside and outside machining practices. This will include: turning safety, lathe controls, single-point threading, tapping, fits and tolerances, measurement, process control, tooling and lathe set-up. Proper set-up and use of a four-jaw chuck will be demonstrated and explained. Many lathe operations use tooling with carbide inserts, but a machinist must know the proper technique for grinding the surfaces of a solid carbide lathe tool and applying the proper rake angles. Tool grinding is discussed and demonstrated. There will be a NIMS Chucking project as well as a NIMS online exam (Chucking) to earn NIMS credentials.
